I tapered for a full week leading into this race and ran in my new New Balance 1400 racing flats (not pictured, but they are awesome.)  Simply put this was my best race ever.  It was a fitting final dash in preparation for marathon on September 25th, and it gave me a good idea of what to expect.  Obviously I’m not going to run this fast in the marathon but if I can manage to limp out a couple of 20 mile training sessions over the next few weeks I’ll be prepared to run at a 7 minute pace.

Also, Gilbert got to visit me at the Rahr beer tent after the race.  Thanks to Erica, Aaron, and Emily for bringing the dogs down to White Rock lake bright and early on Sunday morning ;)

Melon Dash 5K - August 6th, 2011

The race started at 8:15 on a hot and humid Saturday morning.  Overall, this was a great small race in a welcoming downtown McKinney community.  The race organizers did a good job placing the starting line and finishing chute in a shaded parking lot safe from the blazing heat and the course was well marked.  There were rolling hills in the mid section of the course which caused everyone to lose some time on the third mile, but the final stretch was thankfully down a hill.

Based on my previous 20:09 PR, I was surprised by my performance.  I think the 50 mile weeks and hilly tempo runs are paying off and a 3 day taper sealed the deal.  Fun note: The age group award is candy.  I don’t eat candy, so sorry to all of the kids who wanted these things; they’ll be sitting on my shelf for a few years.

I don’t remember much about this race other than the heat.  It was hot.  I was pretty happy with my time at least.
